Porn Addicts in Seattle

How Can Seeking Integrity Help Sex Addicts and Porn Addicts in Seattle?

Multiple studies report that prostitution and sex trafficking are serious issues in Seattle and surrounding areas. To this end, the city has multiple privately owned sex-focused venues (massage parlors, strip clubs, bathhouses, sex clubs, adult theaters, and the like), as well as several public areas known for quick hookups, street prostitution, and anonymous sex. This is in addition to the usual issues with hookup apps, affair apps, prostitution apps, and online pornography.

And who do we suppose is engaging in all of this sexual activity? Sex addicts, of course. These unfortunate individuals, when their behavior comes to light, often state that they have tried multiple times to quit what they’ve been doing, and sometimes they do fine with that for a few days or even weeks, but they can’t ever manage to quit and stay quit. They keep going back to these sexually intense but highly destructive activities even though they’ve experienced a variety of (often severe) consequences as a result. In short, they are addicted.

Often, these folks have no idea why they feel compelled to engage in sexual behaviors that ruin their relationships and other aspects of their lives. This is because they don’t understand that sex addiction is not about sexual pleasure. Instead, it’s about emotional escape. Sex addicts use sexual fantasy and behavior to numb (to avoid feeling) emotional discomfort—stress, anxiety, loneliness, depression, shame, boredom, and the like. They don’t compulsively chase sex because they have a high sex drive; they do it because sex is their primary way of coping with the vicissitudes of life.

The good news for Seattle area residents is that sex and porn addiction are not a life sentence. These issues, even when combined with active substance abuse (sometimes referred to as chemsex addiction or substance/sex addiction), are treatable. But only when addicts seek the right type of help. Unless they are speaking with a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT) or a treatment center specializing in sexual addiction and related disorders, they are unlikely to get the help they need.

Seattle residents should also understand that if an addiction treatment center says they treat sexual addiction, that doesn’t mean they do it well. In fact, it probably means they view sex and porn addiction through the same lens as substance addictions. If so, that is a mistake. Sex and porn addiction are unique problems requiring specialized knowledge and assistance. At Seeking Integrity, we treat sex, porn, and substance/sex addiction. That’s it. That’s all we do.

What Is Sex Addiction?

Sex addicts use sexual fantasy and behavior to escape (to avoid feeling) emotional discomfort – stress, anxiety, loneliness, depression, shame, boredom, and the like. Often, they spend hours (or even days) in an emotionally elevated state of sexual fantasy and pursuit. This state is sometimes referred to asthe bubble. It is this trancelike state, rather than actually engaging in sex, that provides the escapist “high” of sex addiction.

Sex addiction is diagnosed based on three primary criteria:

  • Preoccupation to the point of obsession.Sex addicts spend hours or even days, fantasizing about, pursuing, and eventually engaging in sexual acts.
  • Loss of control.Sex addicts try and fail, usually repeatedly, to quit or curtail their problematic sexual behaviors.
  • Negative consequences.Sex addicts experience issues at work or in school, relationship woes, financial issues, declining physical/emotional health, isolation, arrest, etc.

If you identify with these criteria, it is likely you are sexually addicted. If you are uncertain, we suggest you take this anonymous 25-question sex and porn addiction screening test.
