LEADING SEXOLOGIST SHOWS SUPPORT OF THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION CLASSIFYING COMPULSIVE SEXUAL BEHAVIOR DISORDER AS A MENTAL HEALTH CONDITION
Seeking Integrity LLC CEO Robert Weiss rallies behind the World Health Organization adding Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder to the International Classification of Diseases.

Los Angeles, CA (July 12, 2018) – Seeking Integrity LLC CEO Robert Weiss, LCSW, CSAT-S, leading sex addiction/compulsivity and related intimacy disorders expert, is in full support of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) decision to include Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder (CSBD), more commonly known as sex addiction, as an official diagnosis in its latest revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11). International health professionals and government agencies around the world use the ICD-11 to identify and diagnose physical and mental health concerns. CSBD, according to both Weiss and the WHO, is defined by preoccupation to the point of obsession with and loss of control over sexual fantasy and behavior resulting in negative life consequences.

“This is a significant milestone and I’m gratified with this progress,” Weiss says. “The World Health Organization is always at the forefront of new diagnoses, and this is no exception. As someone who has been researching, writing, teaching, training, treating, and advocating about CSBD for nearly 30 years, I can state unequivocally that this diagnosis will help reduce some of the shame and stigma around sexual addiction/compulsivity, while making it easier for clinicians to diagnose and treat the issue.”

While the CSBD diagnosis is an important step forward, Weiss says that a diagnosis alone is not enough. Based on his broad experience in treating men and women struggling with these issues, he has come to believe that effective treatment must be holistic and milieu-based. “Treatment is not just about assessing and addressing CSBD, it must address the underlying trauma or emotional challenges that drive the compulsive behavior.”

At Seeking Integrity, Weiss is driving a 21st Century integrated approach to providing nonjudgmental, non-shaming, online and real-world information, resources, and treatment to address CSBD. He says, “With the advent of the #MeToo movement, the need for greater understanding and more effective treatment of CSBD and other sexual issues has never been greater, and the WHO’s action to recognize CSBD could not be timelier. Thank you, WHO, for making official what I have known to be true all along and have dedicated my professional life to addressing and redressing meaningfully and with integrity.”
